Anthropologie Inspired Bedding

So now you all can know what secret project I have been working on: my Nimbus Jersey Comforter knockoff from Anthropologie!

Here is my inspiration:

And here is my version {Ignore the black curtains and snickers on the bedside table... :)} :

Iloveit. Do you?

I researched a few other DIY anthro comforters and all of them said "it took me 5 hours" or "it took me 10 hours" Well ladies, you must have been expert seamstresses because this baby took me like 20+ hours.

I don't have a ruffle attachment for my sewing machine and I don't have a serger so that made my project time infinitely longer.

I took a duvet and used it as the base and {simply} sewed the pleated side {made from cut up sheets that were on clearance!} onto it, flipped it, DONE.
Oh and the best part? If I had bought it at Anthropologie it would have cost $500+ for the set. This cost me $50 to make.

$50!

It needs some fancy pillows but for this mini photoshoot I just used what I had lying around the house.

Now I have a serious problem... I need to re-do the rest of my master bedroom to match it! :) I am so ready for my room to be painted {it still has the flat paint from when the house was built in 2006} and for my furniture to be updated and LIGHTENED up {everything is black and white}. I need COLOR and lightness!

Now I try to spend even MORE time in bed {with snickers} :)

What do you think?

Great knockoff. I know the feeling of taking a long time - I added a ruffle to an apron last weekend. I think I worked all day on one apron - some of my sisters made two and other projects in that same amount of time.

That's very impressive! It's kind of funny, I was just looking at their site, wishing I had their bedding! Have you seen their shower curtain with the same look of material. Adorable!
Anyway, I'm lovin' on your blog, missy. :) super cute.

so this is the secret project! I was so curious! wow, you did an awesome job, it looks very very similar to the Anthro one! I think all their stuff is outrageously overpriced. Way to achieve an expensive look on the Cheap!

Beautiful bed cover! I am such a country bumpkin, that I never heard of Anthopoligie...but... Here's my instant thought, that I will try out and let you know...
In 3rd grade "Home Economics = Home Ec" (OK, yes, ancient history, and yes, it was in the '50's!!!) all the girls were required to hand-stitch "gathered" aprons, sans sewing machines for tiny 8 year's old fingers.

We used big thick needles, and heavy industrial strength thread (Upholstery or AWNING THREAD). After we made a "running stitch" through the width of the apron material, we just pulled the loose thread end against the first knotted end, and slid the fabric along until it was uniformly "gathered."

Couldn't you do the same thing here, without the time-consuming pinning each gather as shown in the photo? Then just pull each width to the same uniform width, tie off the thick upholstery industrial thickness thread end, and there you have it. Maybe one hour's work...
